Line Breaks

To insert a single line break between text requires the use of the  <br /> tag.  The effects of using the <br /> tag is equivalent to single spacing within a word processing document.  The <br /> tag is also used to break a line of text at a particular point in a paragraph within the document.  The <br /> tag does not have a closing tag.

Without the <br /> tag, the sentence would be displayed as follows:

Note:    To conform to new HTML standards always include a / within any opening tag that does not have a closing tag (i.e <br />).

 A horizontal rule line, like the one directly above this sentence, causes a line break in addition to inserting a horizontal rule in a Web document.  Inserting a horizontal rule requires the use of the <hr /> tag.

Note:    Like the <br /> tag, the <hr /> tag does not have a closing tag.
